How To Have A More Successful Semester

Now that I have one full semester of college under my belt, I consider myself somewhat of an expert.  Just kidding!  There are still many things that confuse me and I still get lost looking for the bathroom sometimes. Rumor has it, that the reason there are so many squirrels on my campus is because they are the spirits of students who have gotten lost in buildings and were never found. Anyway, during break I did a lot of thinking about how I could make my next semester even AWESOMER (is that even a word? it is now) so here we go!

How To Have A More Successful Semester

  • Get Organized

If you weren’t so put together last semester, that’s okay! This is a new year with  new classes and new chances to improve! Get a planner and write down when all your assignments are due, or input them on your phone if you are more tech savvy than I am.  Maybe you can compile all your syllabi and create a spreadsheet if you want to be fancy, anything to get it together.

  • Make Time to Study

Even if it’s just 30 minutes a day, it will be worth it. Just looking through the amazing notes that you take in class will help you remember the information that you learned. Plus, when it comes time to take a text,  you won’t have to cram! How great is that?

  • Find An Organization You Love

Greek Life, Underwater Basket Weavers of America, or Sweaters for Puppies. No matter what it is, if you love it, join it! Joining an organization will help you connect with people that enjoy the same things that you do and open you to new opportunities that you wouldn’t have otherwise. Also, if you work hard and become a type of officer or leader, it will look AMAZING on your resume and impress potential employers.

  • Try Something New

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in Spain? Look into a study abroad program! Have you even wanted to know if your voice is as good as it sounds in the shower? Join a choir club! There are so many different things on and around campus that you probably were not exposed to in your hometown, so why not check out that place that sells sushi and car parts? What’s the worst that could happen? You don’t like it, then you can move on!

  • Make Healthy Habits

This is the time where your body can do anything. So why not treat it well so that you can keep on doing fun and adventurous things. Maybe staying up until 3 am when you have an 8 am class isn’t the best thing to do. Bodies need sleep to function, and if you’re half-asleep in class, not only are you missing out on crucial information, you are making it harder for your body to recover from the previous days activities and this could lead to a weakened immune system. Although it sounds good and is cheap, McDonald’s for every meal won’t do your arteries any good. Also, contrary to popular belief, you CAN find healthy foods for great prices. If don’t know what the inside of your campus rec looks like, maybe you should check it out sometime. You don’t have to become a bodybuilder or anything, but a few laps won’t kill anyone (at least I hope not). And if you can’t make it to the gym that’s OK. There are a million and one dorm/ apartment workout guides on Pinterest!

  • Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes

It’s perfectly fine and normal to screw things up (if you didn’t I would assume that you are a robot trying to take over the world). College is a time where there are few repercussions for mistakes (as long as you don’t go and commit real crimes).  It’s okay to not be perfect!

  • Don’t Let the Past Bring You Down

Didn’t make the grades you wanted last semester? Had an awful break up? Reliving your bowl-cut from 8th grade? It’s all okay! This is a new semester, the world is your oyster (who says that in real life?) But truly, you have a brand new schedule, with new professors. All they know is what you bring to the classroom this semester. Nothing is stopping you from making Dean’s List if that is what you want. Your significant other and you split? Well, as heartbreaking as it is, take that time to focus on yourself and your needs.  There are always more chances to meet great people!

Don’t forget that you should be doing what you love! Go out with friends or go to a concert! Do something that relieves stress!
